Pittsburgh - January 3, 2007 - BodyMedia, Inc., a world leader in the design and development of wearable body monitoring products and services, announced today that Fernando Sanchez has joined the Company as the new Chief Executive Officer and Board member. Additionally, Dr. Astro Teller, former CEO, will take on role of Chairman and Chief Research and Strategy Officer.
In his new role as CEO, Sanchez will focus on driving greater operational and strategic initiatives to help to continue to grow a vibrant business, said Jay Katarincic; Managing Director of Draper Triangle Ventures and BodyMedia's longest standing outside board member. Specifically with the addition of Fernando Sanchez, the company will finalize the transition from an entrepreneurial technical orientation to a focused commercialization company. Dr. Teller will continue to focus on technology advancements that will represent the future product roadmap for BodyMedia.
"Our new management structure is designed to position BodyMedia to fully leverage its investments in intellectual property and disease management devices in a way that drives new revenues and maximizes our market opportunities," said Katarincic. And with Astro, we already know we have one of the leading minds in the industry. I am confident that with his considerable expertise and passion, BodyMedia will continue to grow and prosper."
Prior to joining BodyMedia, Fernando Sanchez was Senior Vice President of ArthroCare (ARTC) with responsibilities in manufacturing, R&D, quality, regulatory, information systems, and finance. "This is an incredibly exciting time to be joining BodyMedia. The strength of BodyMedia's business model, the success its products are already enjoying in the market, the incredible potential of its technology, the company's extremely strong intellectual property position, and the culture of innovation that exists create a rare confluence of opportunities. My goal is to build on the tremendous momentum that this company is already experiencing," said Sanchez.
Dr. Astro Teller co-founded BodyMedia as Chairman and CEO in 1999. Under his leadership, BodyMedia developed and began selling the world's first multi-sensor wearable body monitors designed for consumer-acceptability and long term wear. Today BodyMedia ships many thousands of products every month into 21 countries around the world, and has already collected more than a billion minutes of automatically monitored human physiologic and behavior data in its servers from people in their natural environments over years of their lives - the first large scale continuously-recorded free-living body monitoring database of its kind in the world. Prior to BodyMedia, Dr. Teller was co-founder, chairman and CEO of Sandbox Advanced Development.
"We have put ourselves in a strong position to lead development of a new market in disease management and behavior modification through advanced technology. I am thrilled to focus my efforts on the longer term potential of the unique position BodyMedia finds itself in with continued innovation in this field focused on delivering real health solutions for clinicians and consumers alike," said Teller.
