SAINT FRANCIS UNIVERSITY’S CERMUSA AND BODYMEDIA® TO COLLABORATE ON INNOVATIVE TELEMEDICINE SOLUTION FOR PATIENTS WITH DIABETES AND OBESITY

March 30, 2004

PITTSBURGH, PA -- BodyMedia and Saint Francis University’s Center of Excellence for Remote and Medically Under-Served Areas (CERMUSA) have entered into a research arrangement that will extend BodyMedia’s wearable body monitoring technologies to patients in remote areas suffering from chronic diabetes and obesity.

As part of this project, clinical researchers will utilize BodyMedia’s body monitors and software as well as wirelessly enabled glucose meters and weight scales to remotely monitor vital patient information such as blood-glucose levels, exercise habits, sleep quality, weight change, nutritional intake and overall compliance with programs administered by their caregiver.

This project will enable people in rural and medically under-served areas to have unprecedented feedback from their caregivers without leaving home. This cutting edge technology will be utilized by CERMUSA in its diabetes projects to ensure that quality care, awareness, and education are delivered to the patients; all key to understanding and controlling this chronic disease.

“We are delighted to be working with CERMUSA on this project”, said BodyMedia CEO Dr. Astro Teller. “This project is very important on its own merits, but this work will also translate into similar applications for a range of other disease and condition management markets.”

“I’m delighted to see real progress at real solutions for diabetics coming out of my district”, said Congressman John Murtha of Pennsylvania’s 12th Congressional District.

“It is CERMUSA’s vision that through the use of these emerging computing and telecommunications technologies like those being developed by BodyMedia, we will improve the clinical results and enhance the quality of life for residents of rural communities like Fayette County,” Center Director Jim Bates said in a recent interview. “I am looking forward to working with BodyMedia on the exciting project.”
