BODYMEDIA® AWARDED WEARABLE BODY MONITORING PATENT FOR HEALTH, WELLNESS AND FITNESS. BROAD PATENT COVERAGE FOR MULTI-SENSOR APPROACH

November 18, 2003

PITTSBURGH, PA -- BodyMedia, Inc., a leading developer and provider of body monitoring applications for clinical and consumer healthcare markets, announced today, that it has been awarded United States Patent No. 6,605,038, entitled “System For Monitoring Health, Wellness and Fitness.” The patent covers mechanisms for detecting, monitoring, and reporting physiological information gathered from a multi-sensor wearable body monitor, with specific coverage around a range of physiological sensors such as motion, heat flux, and skin conductivity.

“This patent is broad and covers an important aspect of BodyMedia’s intellectual property”, said Dr. Astro Teller, chairman and chief executive officer of BodyMedia. “Our core business is centered around gathering and interpreting multiple sources of vital sign data to derive higher level statements about the human body such as calories burned, sleep and body context.”

Validation of BodyMedia’s multi-sensor monitors and algorithms are on-going at universities in the U.S. and abroad. Results regarding accuracy of the algorithms have been presented by the University of Pittsburgh, Virginia Tech, Bloomsburg University, University of Illinois, and the University of Texas El Paso in scientific conferences and journals. Patient populations in these studies range from the very fit to cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation patients. With minimal variation, the studies all report high degrees of correlation with gold standard metabolic measurements under a wide range of activities.

Due to their multi-sensor design, BodyMedia’s monitors provide comprehensive, actionable feedback about a person’s body and lifestyle that can be shared with researchers, physicians, dieticians and personal trainers via the Internet. The company is currently selling products in the clinical weight management and medical research markets. Products for club based fitness centers, self-care weight management, diabetes management, and wellness are slated for early next year.
