BODYMEDIA RECEIVES DISTINGUISHED INTERNATIONAL DESIGN HONOR

PITTSBURGH, PA - June 28, 2002 - BodyMedia, Inc. received top honors in this year’s 2002 Industrial Design Excellence Awards (IDEA), recognized as “the premier awards worldwide” for new product design. Sponsored by the Industrial Design Society of America (IDSA) and BusinessWeek magazine, the awards celebrate the year’s most innovative design work in 49 diverse product categories including transportation, furniture, environmental, computer and new media design. BodyMedia’s SenseWear Armband and software received a Gold award in the Medical & Scientific products category.

Out of 1116 entries from 16 countries, only 41 designs received this year’s Gold award including Apple Computer, Ford Motor Co., Samsung and Handspring. “We are honored to receive this award and be in such good company” said Astro Teller, BodyMedia’s CEO. “It is great validation for our product development approach, and the attention to detail our team brings to making world-class body monitoring solutions.”

“This product is intelligent. Not only in what it does, but also in how it has been designed. As the developments of technology have advanced so much in recent years, it becomes more and more rare that one finds a revolutionary application. This is one of those”, said Louise St. Pierre, IDSA, a juror in this year’s competition.

BodyMedia makes wearable body monitors and easy-to-use software that collect, store, process, and represent body data such as energy expenditure (calories burned), activity levels, sleep states, and other important physiologic data - anytime, anywhere. Their monitors are small, body conforming, and lightweight and can be worn for many days at a time, creating medically accurate physiological records of their wearer. BodyMedia offers these products as well as customized applications for a wide range of market needs including self-care weight management, sleep management and performance sports.

The 41 IDEA Gold winners will be celebrated at a ceremony Saturday, July 20, the first day of the 2002 IDSA National Conference & Design Gallery in Monterey, CA. In addition, the BusinessWeek IDEA report arrives on newsstands June 28th with a complete list of all the Gold winners and in-depth analysis of many of the designs. IDSA’s quarterly magazine, Innovation, will also feature a detailed story on BodyMedia’s design in its widely circulated Innovations Yearbook this Fall.
